Rory McIlroy, a staunch critic of the LIV Golf tour, has found himself in a surprising position as he features prominently in the breakaway league’s latest promotional materials. Despite his vocal opposition to LIV since its inception, McIlroy is now part of “The Showdown,” a highly anticipated matchplay event set to take place in December at Shadow Creek, Las Vegas.

McIlroy, along with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, will face off against LIV stars Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau, marking a rare crossover between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf.

While the event’s promotion was meant to avoid directly involving either tour, LIV has used McIlroy’s image across its platforms, highlighting the irony given his past condemnation of the league.

The inclusion of McIlroy in LIV Golf’s promotional content marks a significant shift, considering his previously firm stance against the league. In 2022, he openly dismissed LIV as “dead in the water” and consistently resisted any association with it, even as prominent figures like Koepka and DeChambeau joined.

Despite a peace agreement between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf being reached last year, McIlroy has maintained his disdain for the league. His presence in LIV’s marketing for “The Showdown” reflects a complex new reality in professional golf, where rivalries are increasingly blurred by shared events.
