Former World No. 1 Jason Day reveals why he never left the PGA Tour for LIV Golf

Former World No. 1 golfer Jason Day has explained why he remained with the PGA Tour instead of joining LIV Golf, maintaining a neutral stance on the controversial league since its inception two years ago. Despite speculation that he might join fellow Australian and major champion Cameron Smith, who moved to LIV in 2022, Day clarified that he was never formally approached with an offer due to his history of injuries.

“I didn’t knock it back,” Day told Code Sports Australia. “It was a business move…but they [LIV Golf] said, ‘We love Jason, but he’s too injured.'” Emphasizing that he holds no resentment toward LIV, Day stayed committed to the PGA Tour, a decision that led to an emotional victory at the 2023 Byron Nelson, ending his five-year winless streak.

Day’s journey back to form was marked by overcoming chronic back issues and a significant swing rebuild under coach Chris Como. Once ranked World No. 1 for 47 weeks, Day’s ranking had dropped to 175th at the beginning of 2023, but his Byron Nelson victory propelled him to 20th.

Reflecting on his choice to remain on the PGA Tour, Day expressed gratitude, noting that it was the right environment for him. Like many fans, he hopes for a resolution between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, envisioning a future where players from both circuits compete together more frequently.

“I’m hoping we join back together,” he said, highlighting his desire to see familiar faces from the LIV Tour back in PGA events beyond the majors.
