Matildas star Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis confirm wedding date with Instagram post

Matilda star Sam Kerr has shared photos from the moment she proposed to her long-term girlfriend, American professional soccer player Kristie Mewis.

The couple first sparked speculation that the question had been popped in September when fans spotted Mewis wearing what appeared to be — and, as it turns out, was — an engagement ring.

But the football power couple didn’t confirm their engagement until November 9 when Mewis revealed the news in an interview with People magazine.

“[She’s] my biggest supporter, always listening to me nag and complain, all of my crazy antics,” Mewis told the publication.

And now, in an Instagram post to her 1.8 million followers, Kerr simply wrote, “September 1st, 2023”, alongside happy snaps that show her down on one knee.

That places the pair’s engagement to about two weeks after the Matildas’ World Cup campaign ended in the third place playoff against Sweden.

It also came just days after Kerr’s 30th birthday.

Duo flooded with well wishes
The sweet reveal sparked an outpouring of celebrations from friends, fans, and famous names in world sport.

Matildas goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold commented: “Here they are. Love you guys x”.

Teammates Steph Catley, Ellie Carpenter, and Caitlin Foord were also among those to add their congratulations.

Australian cricketer David Warner wrote: “Congratulations”.

One fan even commented: “WE CAN FINALLY SLEEP PEACEFULLY”.

A number of England stars and Kerr’s Chelsea teammates also passed on their well wishes.

How long have they been dating?
Kerr and Mewis went public with their relationship in 2021 after the Tokyo Olympics.

The pair sparked romance rumours after their respective teams played against each other in the bronze medal match in the women’s semi-finals.

After the US won 4-3 against Australia, Mewis sat down to hug and console Kerr
