Sam Kerr at centre of key detail as Matildas appoint new head coach on interim basis

Tom Sermanni has been appointed as the interim head coach of the Matildas, taking charge while Football Australia continues its search for a permanent replacement for Tony Gustavsson. Sermanni, who previously coached the team from 1994-1997 and 2005-2012, returns to lead the team in their upcoming friendlies, including matches against Germany and Switzerland.

A veteran coach with over 30 years of experience, Sermanni is known for shaping the Matildas’ golden generation, which includes stars like Sam Kerr, Caitlin Foord, Emily van Egmond, and Tameka Yallop. His familiarity with the players and his previous success, including leading the team to an Asian Cup victory in 2010, make him a stabilizing figure during this transitional phase.

Football Australia’s CEO, James Johnson, emphasized that Sermanni’s appointment provides valuable time to find the best long-term candidate for the head coach position. Sermanni’s return comes at a critical moment as the Matildas prepare for important future tournaments, including the 2026 Asian Cup and the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

Although it’s unclear whether Sermanni will pursue the role permanently, his extensive knowledge of the international football landscape positions him well to guide the team in the interim. Sermanni, who is currently head of women’s football at Western Sydney Wanderers, has taken a temporary leave to focus on the Matildas’ upcoming international fixtures.
