Solheim Cup player ratings: Nelly Korda stars for USA, Charley Hull leads European fightback and where was Leona Maguire?
The 2024 Solheim Cup proved to be a thrilling showdown between Team USA and Team Europe, with Lilia Vu clinching the decisive putt that ended Europe’s six-year reign. The USA reclaimed the trophy with a 15.5-12.5 victory after a tense final-day comeback from Europe.
Nelly Korda stood out for Team USA, maintaining her form across the weekend, even though she suffered a heavy defeat to Charley Hull in the singles. Hull’s stunning 6&4 victory over Korda was one of the highlights for Team Europe as they mounted a spirited, but ultimately unsuccessful, rally. While veterans like Anna Nordqvist and Celine Boutier had mixed performances, younger stars such as Rose Zhang and Megan Khang went undefeated, further bolstering the USA’s dominance.
Team Europe saw standout moments from players like Madelene Sagstrom and Georgia Hall, both of whom helped keep their team’s hopes alive. However, key players like Leona Maguire, who shone in previous editions, had limited impact this time, appearing in just two matches. Maguire did, however, secure a vital singles point on Sunday. Rookie Esther Henseleit impressed with key shots under pressure but fell short in converting crucial moments into full points.
Meanwhile, Linn Grant struggled to find form, going winless in all four matches. Despite Europe’s valiant fight, Team USA’s consistency and depth, especially in their singles performances, proved decisive in securing the trophy for the first time since 2017.
